Position on the Harvesting of Whales
The Saint Lucia National Trust is leading the way in formulating a position on the harvesting of whales in St. Lucia. This forms part of efforts by the Trust to move into a renewed direction of advocacy on issues which affect the island's natural and cultural patrimony. As part of this process, the Trust is currently administering a questionnaire targeting various sectors of society including fishermen throughout the island to solicit the views of the public on this matter. The Trust will also seek to facilitate a public discussion on the matter of whaling involving representatives from both sides of the debate. The aim of this process is the development of a balanced position based on a systematic and well structured approach. According to the Trust, advocacy is not just about voicing opinions but also about facilitating public discussion to arrive at policy positions.
The public is urged to participate in this exercise by initially completing a short questionnaire on the whaling issue. The questionnaire can be found on the Trust website: www.slunatrust.org.
The issue of whale harvesting is but one of the many issues which will be the subject of advocacy to be spearheaded by the National Trust. Included among the issues are: turtle harvesting, beach protection, sand mining amongst others.
