East Coast Islets
The numerous rocky outcrops and small islets off
the east coast of St. Lucia have been vested in the St. Lucia National
Trust for their management and protection.
Those that fall within the northern management area are:
- Fous Island
- Lapins Island
- L'Islet à Ramier
- Rouche Island
- Des Bateaux Island
- Dennery Island
- Fregaté Islands
The
windswept Fous Island, to the northeast of Comerette Point, is a
nesting place for many of the Frigaté birds that can usually be seen
hovering overhead.
Lapins Island is just south of Rouge Point just at the entrance to the Esperance Harbour.
L'Islet
à Ramier, at the southern end of Anse Louvet, probably got its name
from the wild pigeons once found all over the island.
Rouche Island is a small island covered with vegetation that is situated just off the headland to the south of Trou Halhal.
Des Bateaux Island is a small rocky islet in Fond d'Or Bay just north of the village of Dennery.
Dennery
Island is a fairly large island with steep cliffs and sparse
vegetation. It is just offshore in the Dennery Bay and has been
traditionally used as a grazing area for sheep and goats.
Close
to the headland that forms the northern side of Praslin Bay, are the
small, rocky Fregate Islands. They are important nesting sites for the
Magnificent Frigate Bird and other sea birds.
